Since there are many causes of strabismus, the treatment is individualized. Strabismus is an eye problem that can be treated at any age.
Treatment with glasses
Some types of strabismus are caused by refractive error. When the patient starts wearing glasses, the strabismus disappears. Glasses are enough for this type of tilt.
Occlusion Treatment
This treatment method can be used if the patient has lazy eye syndrome.
Orthoptic Treatment
Orthoptic treatment is physiotherapy of eye muscles. It is applied to strengthen some muscles and binocular vision. Binocular vision enhancement corrects three-dimensional vision. This function of our eyes is very important in our daily life as well as keeping our eyes parallel. It allows us to be more comfortable and successful when driving, playing sports that require distance and time regulation, such as basketball and tennis.
Surgical intervention
Congenital strabismus is a strabismus that does not require glasses and must be operated on at an early age (6 months to 1 year). The vast majority of cataracts occur between the ages of 2 and 3 and can be corrected with glasses. Cataracts that do not improve even with glasses require surgical treatment. Strabismus operations are mainly performed under general anesthesia. Anesthesia is performed by doctors specializing in pediatric anesthesia. With early diagnosis and treatment of strabismus, it is possible to prevent lazy eye and achieve 3-dimensional vision. For this reason, every child suspected of having strabismus should be taken to a strabismus specialist ophthalmologist before reaching a certain age.
Botox
Botulinum toxin (BOTOX) may also be used in some strabismus treatments. Botox is effective and can be used as a treatment method for strabismus caused by stroke, in patients who have undergone surgery but have not fully recovered, and in patients with goiter. Double vision usually occurs with a sudden displacement of the eyes associated with paralysis, and this is a very difficult situation for the patient. The accepted method in this type of cataracts is to wait 6-8 months, but during the waiting period botox can be applied to reduce the double vision complication. Complete recovery is possible when treatment is started immediately after the onset of constipation.
