Strabismus Operations | Dr. Gunel Khaliqverdiyeva

Strabismus Operations

Strabismus surgery is a surgical method used to treat strabismus by interfering with the eye muscles. Depending on the degree and direction of tightness, interventions such as shortening or stopping the muscles are applied. Thanks to this, it is ensured that the two eyes come to the middle point. An effective result is usually seen with a single operation.

Strabismus is a disease that can be permanently cured with early diagnosis. While initial intervention is provided by glasses, botox or drop treatments, surgical interventions are used for definitive solution.

Why is Ophthalmic Surgery Performed?

Strabismus can cause symptoms such as double vision, loss of 3D vision, sensitivity to light, headaches and eye pain. This situation has a negative impact on daily life and harms eye health.

If lazy eye occurs, its development can lead to complete vision loss.

To prevent all this, we perform a strabismus operation.

Strabismus surgery is performed in different cases, and this decision is made by the ophthalmologist based on the individual condition of the patient. Below are some of the main reasons and conditions that explain when strabismus surgery is performed:

In what cases is strabismus surgery performed?

1. Inadequate conservative treatments: If conservative treatments such as glasses, contact lenses, eye exercises, or prism glasses are not effective enough, surgery may be necessary.

2. Severe and persistent strabismus: In these cases, surgery may be the most effective way to realign the eyes and restore vision.

3. It is used to prevent myopia from progressing to amblyopia (lazy eye).

There is no specific age limit for strabismus surgery. This operation can be performed starting from infancy.

What preparations are made before strabismus surgery?

Preoperative preparation is very important for a successful and safe operation:

Blood tests: Blood tests are done before surgery to assess the general health of the patient.

Eye examination: An eye examination is performed to determine the degree and direction of strabismus.

Orthoptic examination: An orthoptic examination is performed to assess eye muscle coordination.

Use of glasses or lenses: If there are refractive errors, the use of glasses or lenses is stopped before the operation.

Nutrition: A complete fasting period of at least 6 hours prior to surgery is essential for complete gastric emptying. For patients with serious illness requiring medication, medication regimens are evaluated and adjusted by the appropriate anesthesiologist prior to surgery. It is also very important to follow this rule.

Is Clavicle Surgery Risky?

Laparoscopic surgery has the risks of a standard operation under anesthesia. It does not pose any additional health risks. Since it has a success rate of about 90%, you can easily have the operation. The risk of vision loss from surgery is 1 in 40,000.

Postoperative Care and Recovery

The First Days After Strabismus Surgery

Pain and discomfort: There may be a small amount of pain and discomfort in the eyes after surgery. The doctor can prescribe painkillers.

Redness and swelling: Redness and swelling of the eyes may persist for several days after surgery. This is normal and will pass over time.

Drooping eyelid (ptosis): Temporary drooping of the eyelid may be observed. This usually resolves within a few weeks.

Eye Drops and Medicines

After surgery, the doctor may prescribe antibiotic and steroid eye drops to prevent eye infections and speed up the recovery process.

Medicines should be used regularly as prescribed.

Eye Protection

Touching and rubbing the eyes: It is important not to rub or touch the eyes after surgery. This reduces the risk of infection and speeds up the recovery process.

Sun protection: Eyes may be sensitive to light after surgery. It is recommended to protect the eyes from strong light by using sunglasses.

Withdrawal from Physical Activities

During the first few weeks, strenuous physical activity, swimming, and other activities that may put pressure on the eye should be avoided.

Regular Eye Exams

It is important to visit your eye doctor regularly after surgery. This is important for monitoring the results of the operation and early detection of any problems.

Improvement of Vision

After the operation, vision will gradually improve. Problems such as double vision or blurred vision may go away over time.

As the eyes recover, visual functions will also return to normal.
